Cornwall Birth & Baby Appeal

You may have heard the exciting news that the Royal Cornwall Hospital is getting an upgrade of its maternity facilities! My name is Lizzie, I’m one of the midwives and am here to tell you all about it.The main difference will be the addition of a midwife-led birth centre within the maternity wing, if you have had a low risk pregnancy, you will be able to come here to have your baby and will receive one-to-one care from a midwife, in a home from home environment. The birth centre will have 4 labour rooms all with birthing pools, active birthing aids like birthing balls, mats and slings, en-suite bathrooms and couches that can move into double beds, the midwives who work here will be dedicated to supporting normal birth and will have extra training, like aromatherapy, to enhance their skills. The birth centre is on track to open in late September 2017.We also have a brand new neonatal unit (which has just opened its doors), where our tiniest patients can receive the highest standard of care in state-of-the-art surroundings. We have more ‘rooming in’ rooms, where mums can stay with their babies and enough room for recliner chairs beside every incubator and cot to promote bonding. The rest of the maternity unit will also be updated and upgraded to ensure that the standard is equal throughout so don’t worry, if you do need to come to the Delivery Suite to have your baby you won’t be missing out.The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal is helping to fund the changes in maternity, follow them on Facebook for more information about how to get involved!TheCornwallBirthandBabyAppeal
